Summer Riding Camp
Each morning campers will help groom and tack up the horses, and then ride in a lesson for one hour. After lunch, and when all the horses are properly put away by the campers, we will explore a special topic reflected by the theme of the week.
We always allow time for play! We might go down to the creek and stomp around in the water, spray each other with water or run through the sprinkler, draw pictures, hold grooming contests, play horse trivia, or anything else the kids might want to do!
CHF will provide a healthy snack during the afternoon activities.
Sessions:
- Week 1 June 15 - 19 Basic Horsemanship
In this week we will teach the fundamentals of handling horses in a safe and correct manner. Children will learn proper grooming techniques, leading, and tacking up. We will also teach the "parts of the horse" (anatomy), colors, breeds, and basic health care.
-
Week 2 June 22 - 26 Games Week
"Games" are so popular with the kids, this year we decided to devote a whole week to playing on horseback. We will play egg and spoon, the ever-popular tag, ride-a-buck, red light green light...
We will be playing games after a "serious" 15-20 minute lesson, in the morning. In the afternoon we will teach various skills with horses (depending on the skills of the group)...and then maybe invent new games to play on horseback!

Week 3 June 29 - July 3 Vet Week
This is a very popular week with the campers each year! We teach campers more advanced aspects of horse care and horse health. Campers learn how to take a temp., wrap a leg, and notice serious health problems. We explore all the serious diseases, how they happen, how to see signs of a problem, and how to handle them. We take a trip to Apex Vet Hospital (our vet) and get a tour by one of the vets! Children will see the surgery room, the breeding department, the lab, and ask questions to be answered by one of the Vets.

Week 4 July 6 - 10 Horse Show Week
The kids never want to miss this one! We learn all about showing. They learn how to get a horse ready for a show, bathing, clipping, etc. They also learn how to compete in a show as a rider.
We hold the CHF Camp Horse Show on the Friday afternoon, on the last day of camp. Family and friends are welcome to watch the campers compete! The kids get really excited to show off their skills and to win ribbons. Plan to leave work early in advance, it is really fun!
